Equity rally boosts Varma's and Ilmarinen's Q1 results

A Q1 2019 equity rally provided the Finnish pension funds with an opportunity to recover from 2018’s negative returns. The period was the strongest first quarter in global equity markets since 1998.

Finnish pension giants Varma and Ilmarinen’s investments rapidly recovered from negative 2018 returns during the first quarter of this year.

Varma’s investments yielded a return of 5.1 percent, up from -0.4 percent from Q1 last year, while Ilmarinen's portfolio pulled in a convenient 4.6 percent in the first quarter against -0.1 percent from the same period last year. Listed equities were the best performing asset class in both companies, yielding 13.1 percent at Varma and 11 percent for Ilmarinen.
