House of Reach's new relationship manager looks back on jump from buy-side to sell-side

Career Path: Helena Nieckels considers moving from a role at Avanza Bank, where she led third party distribution with close to a hundred fund companies, to representing just one asset manager on the sell side at Allianz Global Investors as her biggest career move.

Which career path did you envision for yourself when you were younger?

“I am a numbers person and good at mathematics, and my father is a doctor of Economics, so it seemed like a natural path for me to study Economics at university. Around the time that I was finishing University there was a boom in Internet brokers, and various jobs during my studies led me to Avanza Bank (former HQ.SE)."

Which part of your education have you used the most in your career?

“I think in most cases, you don’t use exactly what you study in practice, but use your educational background in the way you think and how you analyze things.

I think that work experience is by far the most useful expertise in your career. That being said, I would say that I always carry my Statistics lectures with me when I read and analyze things. Also, I think that everybody should study Macroeconomics for one semester. It gives you a better understanding of the challenges in politics and how to govern a country, and I think it should be mandatory for everybody.”

Which part of your resumé represents the biggest change in your career?

“I haven’t made any drastic changes in my career, but I consider my move from Avanza Bank to be kind of a jump. At Avanza, I was responsible for all Mutual Fund Distribution (buy side) and then I moved to the “other” side, the sell side, to represent just one asset manager at Allianz Global Investors.

At Avanza Bank, I was constantly being contacted by asset managers who wanted to distribute their funds on the platform. I had a good idea of how you should and should not approach potential investors on the buy side. When I started contacting potential investors in my sell side role at Allianz Global Investors, I understood the importance of relevance and not wasting anyone's time with nonsense.

I knew from my past that there are a lot of asset managers trying to get their attention, and I have great respect for their time."

Which leader in the business has inspired your career the most?

“I have been inspired by a lot of people in my career and it is difficult to mention one. Or I would say that it has been a treat to have had the chance to work with some of the leaders I have met during my career. I appreciate leaders who are intelligent, competent, strong-willed, self-aware, and stand out."

What occupies you the most right now?

“Of course, it is the unreal and challenging times in the wake of the coronavirus. Almost everything has been or will be affected. There is great uncertainty about how the world economy will end up, and no-one knows how long it will last.

The society is adapting to the new “normal” and I am quite curious to see how the world and people will structurally change to the even newer “normal” after the crisis.

The world will never be the same again - however, I am a true optimist, and I do believe that the lessons learnt from this crisis will contribute to a better, friendlier and environmentally greener one!"
