Quant strategist's revelationary road to becoming green bond pioneer

Green bond investor and former AP4 Credit Portfolio Manager Ulf G. Erlandsson knows exactly when he realized green bonds and 'going green' were not just good business opportunities, but rather were the only way for him to invest. He describes the incident as an epiphany that changed him – not only as an investor, but as a person.

"I have to admit I invested in the first green bonds opportunistically, rather than from a green conviction. That new invention piqued my curiosity, I wanted to understand the various aspects of ascribing something non-financial to a bond," says Ulf G. Erlandsson to AMWatch. | Photo: PR

Although Ulf G. Erlandsson recently founded the think tank Anthropocene Fixed Income Institute (AFII), which advocates for climate impact in bond markets, the former quant strategist did not have this focus on green transition when he started his career.

He started investing in green bonds in 2013. Although the first green bonds were issued in 2009, it wasn't until 2013 that they became a natural part of the fixed income market/eco system.
